Pet Owners Too!
So what if I am not a breeder? Should I be concerned about all these laws? They don't affect me, right?
Wrong! If these "puppy mill bills" are enacted, then in very short order, the only place owners will be able to get a puppy is from commercial breeders. Why? Because only the commercial breeders, those who derive their income from breeding, will be able to afford the engineering standards, licensing fees, background checks, etc., that these laws will require. They can write them off as a business expense. Hobby breeders can't do that, and they won't be able to afford all the licensing fees and extra paperwork, etc., to continue their efforts.
You probably won't be able to get your next agility prospect from that great breeder you got one from last time...because she won't be breeding anymore. That wonderful obedience dog won't be available. The thoroughly health-checked, well-socialized puppy won't be available to anyone.
And what next...more limit laws? What about those folks who have 2 dogs - one older, one younger - and want to bring a puppy into the home before the oldster passes on? Are you willing to risk fines, jail, or even euthanasia of your dogs if you are found in violation of your limit laws?
And if PeTA and HSUS push their agenda further, having had success in the dog and cat industry, you can be certain that commercial agriculture will be next. A vegan diet is a choice - but the animal extremists would have this choice taken away from us.
Anyone who owns even a single dog or cat needs to be worried about the massive legislation that's hitting so many states. It's essential that pet owners make their voices heard!
